Files you download from the Internet are often compressed or zipped so that they take up less space and arrive much faster than files that haven't been compressed. You can easily identify compressed files by their extensions, such as .zip (a common standard used in OS X and Windows) and .sit. Before you can use these files, you must learn how to unzip files on mac computers for proper access – luckily the process isn't that complicated!
How to unzip files on mac computersWinZip 1.0 for Mac OS X (November 16, 2010): Initial release is compatible with Intel Macs and can be run on v10.5 'Leopard.' WinZip Mac Edition 2 was released on June 26, 2012. New features include OS X 10.8 'Mountain Lion' support, Finder integration and in-place editing. WinZip Mac Edition 4 was released on June 18, 2015.
Zip disks not mounting could be a bad Zip drive (as I had) not the driver's fault. Try this when upgrading your Mac OSX versions: 1) after upgrading the Mac OS version, use the Iomegaware 4.0.2.
Winzip can zip or unzip on Mac, and open.7z file on Mac. This Winzip app on Mac support.
Unzipping a file on a mac computer is user-friendly and intuitive. To unzip files on a mac, simply follow the steps below:
Double click the zipped file.
The file will automatically be decompressed by Archive Utility into the same folder the compressed file is in.
Access the extracted files by clicking the appropriate icons.
Alternatively, if the method above does not work, you can right-click on the .zip package, and select Open With > Archive Utility (default).
Apple and third party softwareApple used to include a program called StuffIt Expander to decompress zipped files, but doesn't now that OS X lets you unzip files (but not .sit files). However, StuffIt from SmithMicro Software still comes in handy for opening other types of compressed files, notably the .sit or .sitx compressed types. Go to www.stuffit-expander.com or www.stuffit.com/mac/index.html to download a free version of the software or to splurge for the Deluxe version. In addition to compressing files, StuffIt Deluxe lets you encrypt and back up files.
Meanwhile, you can archive or create your own .zip files through OS X, which is useful if you're e-mailing a number of meaty files to a friend. Right-click (or Ctrl-click) files you want to compress inside Finder and choose Compress Filename. The newly compressed files carry the .zip extension. The archive is created in the same location as the original file and is named originalfilename.zip. You can also choose File→Compress. If you compress a lot of files at once, the archive takes the name Archive.zip.
Mac 4 ever. By default, compressed files are opened with the Archive Utility. It appears in the Dock (in Leopard) while the files are being unsqueezed, unless you choose to open them with Stuffit Expander or some other program.
How to zip files on a macOn the flip side, you can also archive or create your own .zip files through OS X, which is useful if you're e-mailing a number of meaty files to a client or friend. Follow the step-by-step instructions below to easily zip files on a mac:
Right-click or Ctrl-click the multiple files you want to compress (whether on the desktop or inside the Finder).
Select Compress Filename from the pop-up menu.
The files are now compressed in a .zip extension and the archive is created in the same location as the original file name, except with the .zip appended to its name.
On some Apple computers, you can also compress a file by simply choosing File→Compress. If you compress a lot of files at once, the archive takes the name Archive.zip.

GIMP for Unix-like systems If available, the official package from your Unix-like distribution is the recommended method of installing GIMP!
 The flatpak build is new and has known limitations, though it will likely provide faster updates, following GIMP releases closely. 
 Therefore choose your installation medium according to your needs. 
 Flatpak build available in: i386, x86-64, ARM and AArch64. 
Flatpak additional instructionsThe flatpak link above should open your software installer and prompt you to install GIMP. Yet it may not work out-of-the-box on some platforms since the flatpak technology is new. If that is the case, ensure flatpak is installed and if clicking the link still does not prompt to install GIMP, then manually install by command line: 
flatpak install https://flathub.org/repo/appstream/org.gimp.GIMP.flatpakref
 Once installed, it will be made available exactly the same way as other applications (menus, desktop overview, or any specific application launch process used by your desktop). 
 If this is not the case, we suggest to report a bug to your desktop or distribution asking for proper support of flatpak. In the meantime, you can still run it by command line (not as the recommended method, only a workaround):

 This installation will also provide regular update. You don't have to come back on this page and install again (it will not work!) when a new version of GIMP is released. Instead if your distribution and/or desktop has a good support for flatpak, it should propose to perform updates. 
 Once again, if your distribution does not have proper support, you can always fall back to using the following command line: 
flatpak update
Systems without flatpak support GIMP can also run on Solaris and is available for the BSD family of systems such as FreeBSD and OpenBSD. 
 Please refer to the documentation for your Unix-like system on the installation of software. 
GIMP for macOSNote: the currently available package provides GIMP 2.10.14 and has not yet updated to the latest version, GIMP 2.10.22. We're working on that, please check back later.

Macports An easy way to compile and install GIMP and other great Free software on your Mac is by using Macports. The installer allows you to choose from a large directory of packages. To install gimp using Macports, you simply do sudo port install gimp once you have Macports installed. 
 Last we checked, the GIMP port file pointed to the current stable release and we have reports from people who've built GIMP successfully this way. 
Homebrew Homebrew is similar to Macports and provides packages (aka formulas) to install, either by compiling them from source or by using pre-made binaries. There are indications that there is now a formula for GIMP, installable with: brew tap homebrew/cask && brew cask install gimp. 
NOTE! Please be aware that it was announced recently that Homebrew is using analytics. To turn this off in homebrew then run: brew analytics off

Fink Fink is a package repository that offer mostly precompiled binaries. It provides the apt-get command known to e.g. Debian and Ubuntu users, and installing GIMP is as easy as sudo apt-get install gimp once you have installed the Fink installer. 
 If there's no binary package, then fink install gimp will compile GIMP from source. 
 Disclaimer: we haven't been able to determine if it is possible to install or build recent GIMP from Fink. Last we checked, GIMP 2.6.12 appears to be the most recent GIMP package that is offered there.
